Think of Ridge's announcement not as a policy statement, nor even as a trial balloon. Instead, think of it as disinformation. To al Qaeda, the statement reads, "Want to try to influence our election? Maybe all you'll accomplish is to keep George W. Bush in charge longer."
As disinformation, it might work, might not. But it's still a stupid idea.
Never hurts to think ahead. What do you do if someone anthraxes the warehouses where the voting machines are stored in half a dozen states? What do you do if a major city goes up in a nuclear fireball or someone cracks the containment dome on a reactor just before election day & everyone downwind has to be evacuated? What worries me is that there aren't plans drawn up already for this sort of a mess...
1 - Just floating the idea (of postponing the elections) might help prevent an attack - because it would undermine a major reason for it.
2 - more likely is an attack in NYC just before the GOP Conv. which would be aimed at scaring delegates so much, they wouldnl't attend. A few jets hit by stingers, and a few NYC hotels hit with old-fashioned truck bombs would do it. (Like in Kenya - which may have just been a run-thru/practice).
3. Or, a major attack between the convention and the election targeting our economic infrastructure in order to send us into a recession (and with us the world)

Congress should act immediately to forestall any potential interference with national elections by mandating that all ballots for the 2004 election shall be cast by mail. This would have the added advantage of obvitating concerns about voting machine irregularities.
It would save a great deal of money if the conventions and election were postponed until alqaida was dismantled and all muslim clerics renounced all violence and condemned all practitioners of violence.
I am personally willing to issue fatwahs against all muslim terrorists and would-be terrorists. Seriously. Right now.
