John Kerry Is Telling An Ugly Lie
Posted by Will Collier  ·   8 July 2004

I noticed this line from one of John Kerry's recent speeches at NRO's Kerry Spot:

"Don’t tell us disenfranchising a million African Americans and stealing their votes is the best we can do."

Um, what?

Let me rephrase that: WHAT?!?

Exactly why hasn't this little tidbit been noted by the national press? With a banner headline? That's not just rhetoric, it's the electoral equivalent of a blood-libel. For one thing, it's a flat-out lie, as reluctantly found by the partisan Democrat-dominated US Civil Rights Commission, which despite months of investigation, noted only 26 people with "disenfranchisement" complaints, most of which were found to be specious (link is to a .pdf file of the minority dissent, see page 32).

Not "a million disenfranchised," but 26 people with complaints, not all of which were valid.

Kerry isn't just lying, he's indulging in blatant, ugly race-baiting (it's noteworty he says nothing about the military personnel whose 2000 absentee ballots were voided at the demands of Gore lawyers--now they were disenfranchised, but since they didn't vote correctly, it's below French John's notice). Why isn't he being called on it by the press?

Scratch that--you already know the answer. The press is on his side. Let's try again:

Why isn't he being called on it by the blogosphere? If this flat-out ugly lie isn't in the same league with Trent Lott's stupidity, I'd like to hear one legitimate reason why not.

Have you heard of the singing group, "AlQerry and the Dhimmicrats?"
They do a kind of hiphop heavy on political analysis, with a background of middle eastern "belly dancing" style music.
I'd like to see their work get more exposure since they seem to be willing to expose alqerry and his gang of dhimmis far better than the newspapers.

Perhaps because johnnyboy lacks Trent Lott's southern draaaaaw and antiquated hairstyle...

Posted by: bj at July 8, 2004 08:16 AM

Because like the post below, facts are an arbitrary thing. It's easy to spout off numbers and claims and not worry about repurcussions when the media is essentially backing your campaign. The other thing is that a chunk of the electorate believe this stuff as gospel.

It reminds me of the scene in the Manchurian Candidate (the original) When Sen. Islen keeps saying there are X number of commies in the DoD and everytime he is asked to repeat the number, it keeps changing.

Same thing here. Next week it may be two million.

Posted by: Steve at July 8, 2004 08:33 AM

I'm with you on the general complaint but to equate it to Trent Lott is a bit of a stretch. Lott was saying we'd be better off if a segregationist sat in the White House in 1948. That was, at the very least, a painfully ignorant statement, if not one that showed Lott's true colors (remember, it wasn't the first time he'd expressed such a thing).

Kerry is playing the race card to a receptive audience (or at least as he sees it). It should be national news because he's saying the U.S. Supreme Court, the Florida elections folks, and possibly the U.S. Civil Rights commission knowingly disenfranchised blacks. Do I think he believes it? No. But, that is not a racists statement, though it is certainly an example of racial pandering from a guilty white liberal.

It should be front page news. And it should be headlined "Kerry disputes Supreme Court and U.S. Civil Rights Commission." And someone should ask him if he thinks that disenfranchising voters is an impeachable offense (because if he really believes what he's saying, it certainly should be). Should Jeb Bush be impeached? Should anyone who currently still holds elective office? Should any Supreme Court justices who voted for the majority opinion in Bush vs. Gore? Make him back up his statements. And then let the spinmeisters spin.

If I were less cynical and more charitable, I would guess that Kerry was referring to black felons rather than blacks denied the opportunity to vote as a result of intimidation, threats, etc. That doesn't change my view of the all-equine ticket -- Horse Face and My Pretty Pony -- or my view that felons have surrendered their right to vote in national elections, but I think it better explains where he comes up with that ridiculous number.

Posted by: tibor at July 8, 2004 11:47 AM

This is part of the mythology that has grown up around the 2000 election. It is an article of faith amongst many on the left that Bush stole the election from Gore, and this is one of the usual 'facts' trotted out. Indeed, a commenter on my site reccently expressed surprise at another commenter who objected to one of these 'facts' as she thought it was "common knowledge."

Kerry just knows his audience.

I completely agree this is an asinine WTF??? kind of statement. I'll add to the speculation about what he's refering to. In addition to the felony voter rolls, many overvotes were thrown out. In my county for instance, over 22,000 (twenty-two thousand) ballots containing overvotes from mostly minority precincts were thrown out. My mother believes she over-voted, so add her to this list. This disenfranchisement is more due to a poor education system, high illiteracy, poor ballot design.. here in the county rather than some nefarious plot hatched by Tallahassee or Washington.

Thanks for the quote info. I'm running quote/links this year on my blog of some of the more outrageous quotes by or about Kerry. Peace. --s

It's not in the same league with Trent Lott's stupidity because John Kerry didn't use hyperbole at one of those 26 men's funerals years later, but in a campaign speech.

Posted by: clay whittaker at July 8, 2004 11:01 PM

Under the assumption that the esteemed Mr. Kerry was speaking of Florida in 2000, I did some math here.

Toot toot.

Unless he meant something else, of course.

Once again we're reminded: Never trust a candidate who will lie, cheat, or steal to get himself elected. If we fail to stop Kerry, we deserve that loser.

What's new?
Dems have been indulging blatant, ugly race-baiting since at least 1968.It works and in balkinized,post-modern america,it will continue to work.

Posted by: dfghj at July 9, 2004 04:16 AM

I swear to God that every time that widow-fucker opens his mouth it spells out in a green mist:

LIE

Posted by: El Jefe at July 9, 2004 06:30 AM

It's desperation time for Kerry, that's why. He's seeing the numbers for the black vote sliding right and in utter panic about it. The Democrats have nothing to offer blacks so they have to go back to the old playbook of race baiting and "damn the man" ghetto politics. It's as ugly as it is phony.

Posted by: Mike M at July 9, 2004 08:11 AM

Will-Anytime you see a statistic that contains the number, "million", you can be almost certain that it is a lie, not a fact. Think "Million Man March" or "estimated that more than one million victims are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS". Neither is verifiably true, but for some reason, "million" is the "threshold of concern". Just my two bits...

ooh. that was a constructive comment.

Tibor,

Preventing felons from voting was an old Southern tactic for disenfranchising blacks.

Here is how it works: You make jay walking on unpaved roads a felony. Then you go to the neighborhood with unpaved roads and pick up the most uppity of the residents. Slap 'em with a felony conviction and a few days in jail and the political threat is over.

Which I why I think full citizenship ought to be restored once the debt to society is paid.

One need only look at the events of Tulia to see that stuff like this still goes on.

I'm still voting for Bush.

Posted by: M. Simon at July 10, 2004 12:12 AM

Classic projection by the (D)'s... their failure to 'steal' the election through the abuse of 14 suits to selectively recount and suppress votes becomes

'The Florida(D) supremes couldn't steal it for us so the US Supreme courts insistance on reading comprehension proves it!
