Has al Qaeda's Number Two been captured?
CHIEF OPPOSITION OPERATIVE RETREATS TO MOUNTAIN HIDEAWAY FOR CONFERENCE WITH FINANCIER
John Kerry in Idaho or Osama in Pakistan? I just want to see John Kerry say in his best Doctor Evil voice: "Welcome to my underground lair..."
FYI, I'll be tracking developments as they arise, along with linkable sources on the top post of my blog.
This just in: Al Qaeda's #2 has been captured. A piece of excrement believed to belong to Osama bin Laden is currently being interrogated by US forces...
As I'm sure you're all aware there are a sea of reports indicating that fighting is ongoing and is expected to continue for the next few hours. These reports also suggest that the individual cornered is, indeed, al-Zawahiri. However, beyond the Bloomberg report mentioned in my post, I have found nothing to post to coroborate suggestions that he has either surrendered or been captured. Additional reports do suggest that he has been wounded in the fighting. So, in all, I feel that I must retract my original claims as they seem to be either premature or overblown or both. I will continue to update this post as events warrant.
Bloomberg has a history on jumping the gun on rumours like these, including the story that OBL had been captured.Consider the source.
Australian media (ABC Online, and The Australian) are reporting that al-Zawahri got away. No one else on the Google News thread has picked up this claim yet.
Aren't they all number two?
This from Debkafile:
DEBKAfile Reports Exclusively: Pakistan red-faced on discovering “high value” terrorist target its troops surrounded in Waziristan was not bin Laden’s No. 2 Zuwahiri but chief of Pushtun Ahmadi tribal federation. DEBKA sources estimate that any harm to Pushtun chief would spark wholesale tribal war offensive against Pakistan
Oops!
Oh well, shit happens. His fault for not getting word out.
I'm losing my ability to sift through this adminstration's veiled half-truths and overt quarter-truths...
wasn't THAT GUY captured a couple of years ago?!?!!:

*sigh* --jon
Jon's Mind, did you actually read the story you linked to? There were reports that he'd been arrested in Iran. Those reports turned out to be false.
The Pakistanis can stand down now, Colin has left the building.
Stephen, since you've been gone for days, I'm wondering whether you are the "high value target" holed up along the Afghan/Pakistan border.
