And Now For Something Completely Different
Posted by Will Collier · 25 February 2004
Want to feel old this morning? Van Halen's "Jump" was the #1 song in the country twenty years ago this week. Might as well jump, indeed... Comments
Heh, I am now caught up in the memories of my senior year in high school, thanks to this post. Hmmmm.....memories :) Posted by: Jim G. at February 25, 2004 06:04 AMDitto. Posted by: James Joyner at February 25, 2004 06:14 AMAnd that was the new-fangled VH, with keyboards. Some of us were reactionary about this new style. Posted by: David at February 25, 2004 06:15 AMThat would also be the "jump the shark" moment for VH. Keyboards? Bah! Posted by: Chris O'Donnell at February 25, 2004 06:39 AMGood God. I'm really that old. Posted by: Mike at February 25, 2004 06:40 AMMinor Threat broke up over 20 years ago. Now they put their teeth in a glass at night and get nagged by their decrepit wives to take stool softeners. Posted by: Jim at February 25, 2004 06:48 AM6th grade was so much fun. Posted by: The Eye at February 25, 2004 07:15 AMVan Halen? Harrumph! derivative garage band whippersnappers. And Black Oak, Arkansas did D.L.Roth, better than Roth, and first. ;) Posted by: J S Allison at February 25, 2004 07:19 AMYou're all a bunch of whippersnappers! How many of you remember King Crimson and/or Papa John Creche with Hot Tuna? Now THATS old! Hell! I still have fond memories of grooving to Iron Butterfly's In-Da-God-a-Da-Vee-Da! Posted by: Deft-N-Dom at February 25, 2004 07:39 AMSurely you mean "In The Garden of Eden" by I. Ron Butterfly. "Wait a minute...this sounds like rock and/or roll!" Posted by: mikeski at February 25, 2004 07:47 AMAh--back when MTV actually played music videos... Posted by: Steven at February 25, 2004 07:50 AMThanks, Deft. As if Stephen didn't make me feel old enough already, now I'm having Hot Tuna flashbacks. Posted by: michele at February 25, 2004 09:06 AMI remember thinking that for rock this was really wimpy. Not a patch on The Clash, who I'd seen at the Brixton Academy not too long before. (My word, they were LOUD) Deft-N-Dom: As for Hot Tuna and King Crimson; wasn't paying attention to the earliest stages, but I remember getting Americas Choice (now how did Serpent of Dreams go again?) and In the Wake of Poseidon in the mid 70's. Oh dear ;) Posted by: John Farren at February 25, 2004 09:30 AMThe Classic Rock station in Boston played this last night during a 'Cheesy Keyboard Classics' set. Seriously. I also remember this as the 'new' Van Halen. (Once saw Hagar on a double bill with ZZ Top before he joined up -- LOUD.) Posted by: Mark at February 25, 2004 09:36 AMI remember this video being in constant rotation on MTV, before the band was "Van Hagared." Ah, the good old days of Diamond Dave--and Eddie's hunt-and-peck keyboard technique. Posted by: Anne at February 25, 2004 10:04 AMDamn it, now I wish I had an MP3 of that song...those fat Yamaha FM synth chords really help define it, along with, of course, the ineffable Eddie on guitar... Maybe I'll load up "Humans Being" (from the Twister soundtrack) as a substitute. Posted by: Erbo at February 25, 2004 10:20 AMAlthough I don't necessarily prefer it, when I see the title to the song "Jump" I 'hear' the Aztec Camera version of it in my mind... Posted by: Chrees at February 25, 2004 11:38 AMChrees, same here. In fact, I think I'll make that version available for download on my site tonight. Posted by: michele at February 25, 2004 12:39 PMThanks. I was really hoping to put off that mid-life crisis for at least another 10 years. You've sped that up now. I appreciate it. I prefer my ignorance blissful thank you very much. Posted by: RussGoble at February 25, 2004 01:36 PMThat's nothing! I remember when the Beatles broke up. Posted by: Patti at February 25, 2004 05:24 PMJump! by Van Halen, huh...
Hell, Patti: I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show. I still recall the buzz in my fourth grade classroom, the next morning. As for Van Halen: I was happy when they ditched the bimbo and brought Sammy into the band. That's when it really started happening, for me. Well, I felt old when I first read this post. Then all the really old farts started commenting about the Beatles, etc. I feel better now, thanks. :) Posted by: Garrett at February 26, 2004 08:08 AMnoooooo........ Posted by: Chris Muir at February 26, 2004 09:55 AMThe Clash? Come on! Imposters and Immitators! Van Halen with Keyboards . . . SUXXXX! I was in love with the Van Halen of VH1, VH2, Fair Warning, Diver Down and Women and Children. Who can forget Mean Street from Fair Warning? What the hell happened to this band? Now THIS is Van Halen: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/clipserve/B00004Y6O7001001/0/104-7022428-2597549 Copy this link into your browser to see what I mean! Posted by: jayef at February 27, 2004 10:34 AMHmmmm... Steppenwolf... ...as new cars... Posted by: matt andrade at February 27, 2004 06:25 PManyone who thinks the '80s are cool and retro should be forced the watch the 'Jump' video... Posted by: Katrina at February 28, 2004 09:32 PMVodka Pundit: "ONE OF THE BEST BLOGS" My personal humble opinion------And by the way kids, my first concert I saw in Person was "Roy Orbison" 1960-Cincinnati Music Hall.
