He Won't Take the Fifth
Posted by Stephen Green · 15 December 2003
Bill Safire doesn't think Saddam will cough up any useful intel: I think Saddam is still Saddam — a meretricious, malevolent megalomaniac. He knows he is going to die, either by death sentence or in jail at the hands of a rape victim's family. Why did he not use his pistol to shoot it out with his captors or to kill himself? Because he is looking forward to the mother of all genocide trials, rivaling Nuremberg's and topping those of Eichmann and Milosevic. There, in the global spotlight, he can pose as the great Arab hero saving Islam from the Bushes and the Jews. It isn't even close to over. Comments
I'd like to see Saddam face justice too. But if he has critical info that we can't get anywhere else, we'll cut a deal. Saddam's a coward and he'll do whatever it takes to save his skin. We will get all the information we want out of him. It is a no-shit matter of national security. We are not just going to ask questions and allow him to not answer them. If he doesn't cooperate with us, I'm sure we know a couple of not-so-nice countries that would like to ask him a few questions behind closed doors when no U.S. officials are present (Qatar). They would probably be more than amenable to asking Saddam a list of our own questions while they are at it. Any deal we cut with Saddam will not hinge on whether he lives or dies, but rather, how he dies. Will he get the plastic shredder on a low setting or a bullet to the head? Saddam will be an example. No more rape and pillage with a retirement in exile. Posted by: Rob at December 15, 2003 03:55 AMSorry Rob, I'd love to think that Saddam would be handed over to the Israelis (or whoever) for some hard questioning, but it just ain't gonna happen. best solution: no trial, no hearings, no sentence just drop him off in baghdad's main square see what happens and yes, i'm very mean Posted by: hey at December 15, 2003 08:01 AMSend him to GITMO. Safire is dead wrong. Saddam is done. His army is gone, his money is seized, his sons are dead, his reign and ruling line are over for good. Without oil to sell or an army to command, Saddam holds no more sway with middle eastern rulers if he was to call for jihad. As much as the liberal media would love the story of Saddam as the flamboyant martyr, it ain't gonna happen. Saddam is a broken, pathetic figure. There's only one message that is going to come out of the trial..."this is what happens when you mess with the United States". Posted by: Mike M at December 15, 2003 09:03 AMIf he didn't intend to trade information for his life, he would have shot himself as soon as he saw who came knocking on his door. He'll talk and in the end if we get all the terrorists, it's okay with me if he goes to Paris and lives the life of a libertine. He's no longer a danger alive, and he will be a martyr dead. I hope people in the Bush administration are smart enough to know that. Posted by: erp at December 15, 2003 09:44 AMerp, I understand what you're saying, but handing the SOB over to the ICC legitimizes that organization. In the long run, this will hurt us worse than not getting the info. I'm not suggesting that we turn him over to anyone except our own military. No world court, no Israeli's, no Gitmo. He's kept somewhere secret and we don't need to know where that is. The deal is, he tells us everything he knows (and I don't care how long that takes), and when we're satisfied (and by we, I mean we Americans) he's told us everything, let him go. If someone wants to take him out, arrest him again, or whatever, I really couldn't care less. He will be known as a rat fink, so can never become a symbol for more terrorism. Executing him = martyr. Pictures, video, etc don't matter. They will say they were doctored and it really wasn't Saddam looking like a rag picker, etc., etc. A live "hero" talking his head off to save his hide is far better than a dead hero. |
