Afternoon Pigeonholing Followed By Evening Fishbarreling
Posted by Stephen Green · 8 April 2002
I'm the, uh, guest star of an, um, interesting write-up on an equally, er, interesting website. I'm wondering how many other corporate welfare-hating, gay marriage-supporting, First Amendment absolutist, drug legalizers Jamese considers right-wing? Mac Thomason, for starters, probably. Tres simplese. Comments
I feel honored to have been slandered on her site. Posted by: Emily at April 8, 2002 03:17 PMSo I saw, Em. But since I'm a paleo-feminist, I figured you'd stick up for yourself. Posted by: Stephen Green at April 8, 2002 03:20 PMAnd the ever-self-referential blogosphere continues - Stacy, your web admin, is linked by via the (ahem) "Rack Browser" on that page... Posted by: Ben at April 8, 2002 03:40 PMI'm wondering how many other corporate welfare-hating, gay marriage-supporting, First Amendment absolutist, drug legalizers Jamese considers right-wing? Throw in Andrew Sullivan for another. Then, of course, there is me, although I've only blogged about gay marriage of the four you've mentioned. Interesting how in her imaginary confrontation you get all the best lines and win the argument. This doesnt seem to happen when you are tearing up some liberal columnist. You even get more drinks than she does. Posted by: ccas at April 8, 2002 03:56 PMI'll never get to understand American politics... Posted by: Ohad at April 8, 2002 04:07 PMSee, that's what happens when they run out of thorazine and the ECT machine is broken down at Danvers... Myria Posted by: Myria at April 8, 2002 04:12 PMI wrote the following at Jamese's site: "Dear Ms. Jamese: "I fully concur that Emily will be the one who hands you your ass on a platter. "However, even if the opposite were to occur, I would avenge the fair lady by dropping my rule never to hit women. "In the meantime, please try to be somewhat perceptive in your posts. Until you do, this will be quite the waste in bandwidth." Never let it be said that chivalry is dead. Oh hell, I just asked her to go ask the Taliban wives if the US maybe should have tried the peace process or asking Omar out to tea. It's an argument made many, many, many times, though, and it never seems to register... Posted by: David Ross at April 8, 2002 04:41 PMI'm wondering how many other corporate welfare-hating, gay marriage-supporting, First Amendment absolutist, drug legalizers Jamese considers right-wing? Well, cut out some of the corporate welfare hating, and you've got me, too, although lots of Republicans are anti-Drug War (the crowd over at NRO, for example). Hell, I'll go Stephen one better, being a woman and not heterosexual and a Jew and under 30 and still right-wing! Registered as a Republican and everything, and no, it's not a recent swerve rightwards because of the war; I was a member of the Young Republicans since about tenth grade and won Best Speaker at a high school Junior Statesmen of America debate once for arguing for the flat tax. Neener, neener. Of course, I'm just waiting for some idiot to throw the term "self-hating" my way, at which point we'll see just who I really hate... Posted by: Asparagirl at April 8, 2002 05:08 PMFunny, I fall into the same boat, too. I'm definitely not a "conservative," but I definitely vote (and am registered) as a Republican, with all the beliefs that you mentioned above. I'm also fairly young - 21 - and I know more than a few people like me, which tempts me to speculate wildly about a possible generational shift in attitudes. I vote Republican because while they may sometimes live up to their name of "The Stupid Party," they haven't polluted and fractured public discourse the way the left has. I'm more libertarian than anything, I suppose, but who in the hell votes Libertarian in the U.S.? Posted by: Jeff B. at April 8, 2002 05:29 PMI'm pretty sure that I'm highly right-wing by those standards, since "hawkish" seems to be the qualifier there. So then, 80-90 percent of the American electorate and virtually all of Congress also fall under that heading. You Nazi! Posted by: jason at April 8, 2002 07:18 PMwelfare-hating, gay marriage-supporting, First Amendment absolutist, drug legalizers Oh sh*t! I'm a VodkaPundit conservative! Posted by: Martin at April 8, 2002 08:31 PMBut.... I think she's funny, and.... i think she has a crush on you, in a punch a guy so he'll notice you sort of way plus..... I never would have noticed her blog otherwise also.... She lives in Toronto, so is probably a Leafs fan ('nuff said) and finally.... Em would kick her butt, no doubt a'boat it. Posted by: Martin at April 8, 2002 09:00 PMI can't wait until I'VE been around long enough to be slandered on her site! Posted by: Spoons at April 8, 2002 11:02 PMI'm pretty sure that I'm highly right-wing by those standards, since "hawkish" seems to be the qualifier there. Heh, heh. All part of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy™ aiming to suck out your mind and soul and replace them with Rush Limbaugh tapes. Posted by: John "Akatsukami" Braue at April 9, 2002 12:12 AMAlrighty guys, it's early morning and I'm in the midst of preparing for work, so I'll have to be brief. Probably the first thing you should know about me is that my parents spent their entire 20s as professional, hanging-out-at-the-Russian-embassy, banned-from-entering-the-US communist organizers. They were both convinced that they'd start some sort of irresistible revolution. One of my early babysitters was on Leon Trotsky's staff in Mexico. (Given how Trotsky ended up I've often wondered what sort of care they thought they were leaving me with.) My typical teenage shift to the left of my parents ideals was a bit limited, I only had anarchism left to choose from. Many of you seem surprised to see yourselves described as right-wing, because you've grown used to assessing political leanings only within the spectrum of US politics; your two party system, in the larger perspective of the entire political spectrum (anarchism to totalitarianism) is definately right of centre. Even "leftist" Democrats are still pretty right wing in the larger perspective. Incidentally, I wish somebody had told me about the vast right-wing conspiracy sooner. How embarassed are we all going to be when the insidious left-wing conspiracy unveils itself on the same day?
